RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Recommended action

That the City Council:

1.                     Accept grant funding from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) for Phase 2 of the Makerspace grant.

2.                     Appropriate funding and increase revenue estimates by $6,500 from the Library Other Grants Fund.

Body

ANALYSIS:

In July 2018, the Corona Public Library (CPL) was awarded $10,000 as part of the Developing Makerspaces in Libraries grant program.  The grant was dispersed to participating libraries to design, build, operate, and sustain successful makerspaces that expand creative learning opportunities for library patrons.  CPL was recently awarded $6,500 as part of phase two of the grant program.  These funds offset the costs of our continued development of CPL’s MakerExchange makerspace.  On April 13, the Corona Public Library hosted a soft opening of the MakerExchange and as early introduction of this exciting new program.  MakerExchange activities are currently being offered which allow patrons to share ideas and create a variety of art, engineering, and other inventive projects.  The physical space of CPL’s MakerExchange will further develop and programming opportunities will continue to expand in coming months.  A third phase of funding is anticipated in the future.

COMMITTEE ACTION:

Not Applicable.

STRATEGIC PLAN:

This item supports the City’s Strategic Plan Goal 4: “Actively engaging in public and private partnerships to provide services and amenities.”

FISCAL IMPACT:

The $6,500 in federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds will reimburse the cost of the Makerspace project and requires a minimum of $1,000 of matching contributions.  Contributions may include the estimated value of various kinds of support including:  financial contributions, in-kind donations from partners, equipment and materials donated from the community (new or used), estimated value of volunteer facilitators/artists/experts, value of donated space or equipment rental, etc.

Approval of the recommended action will result in an appropriation and estimate revenue increase of $6,500 in the Other Grants Fund.

ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS:

No environmental review is required because the proposed action is not a project governed by the California Environmental Quality Act.
