City Council consideration of accepting and appropriating $24,800 from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety for the 2020-2021 Traffic Records Improvement Project.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Recommended action
That the City Council:

a. Authorize the acceptance of the State of California Office of Traffic Safety 2020-2021 Traffic Records Improvement Project Federal Award of $24,800 for Local Law Enforcement Agencies.

b. Appropriate $24,800 of onetime money from the unappropriated General Fund Balance to be reimbursed from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety and increase the General Fund estimated revenue by the same amount for the program award.

c. Authorize the Chief of Police to execute any required grant documents that are in compliance with the City Council's actions hereunder.

ANALYSIS:
The Police Department has successfully applied for funding from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety for the Traffic Records Improvement Project for Local Law Enforcement Agencies.
The goal of the Traffic Records Improvement Project is to facilitate timely, accurate, accessible, and uniform traffic records to identify and prioritize traffic safety issues. This provides the opportunity to choose appropriate safety countermeasures and evaluate their effectiveness.
The Corona Police Department implemented the Crossroads electronic database system in early 2019 in order to facilitate the timely completion and review of traffic collision reports. However, the Corona Police Department Records division has continued to batch, print, and ship collision reports to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) on a monthly basis.
