Body

ANALYSIS:

The Police Department has successfully applied for funding from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety for the Traffic Records Improvement Project for Local Law Enforcement Agencies.

The goal of the Traffic Records Improvement Project is to facilitate timely, accurate, accessible, and uniform traffic records to identify and prioritize traffic safety issues.  This provides the opportunity to choose appropriate safety countermeasures and evaluate their effectiveness.

The Corona Police Department implemented the Crossroads electronic database system in early 2019 in order to facilitate the timely completion and review of traffic collision reports.  However, the Corona Police Department Records division has continued to batch, print, and ship collision reports to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) on a monthly basis.  This decreases the overall efficiency of the electronic collision database system and delays traffic safety data reporting.

This grant funding will allow the purchase of a Traffic Crash Database System Interface to upload Collision Report Data electronically to the CHP SWITRS program. This will increase the Corona Police Department’s contribution to the Office of Traffic Safety’s goal, and it will help improve overall roadway safety by providing accurate and timely data that roadway engineering and traffic safety operations rely on.

The grant is a one-time award for General Fund reimbursement of computer software in support of the program. The grant performance period is October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021.
